Baiting the Trail Cam...
On Thursday, April 12, 2018, 7th graders from Mill Creek Middle School saw a rare sight, an up-close view of a deceased Loggerhead Sea Turtle! This turtle had washed up on Assateague Island and scientists from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Calvert County Natural Resources staff were dissecting it right here at Kings Landing. They were trying to learn more about this fascinating creature and perhaps, discover why the turtle had died. Their conclusion: the turtle had most likely been fatally injured from a boat propeller. Sadly, this is an all too common cause for sea turtle injuries.
CHESPAX was asked if we’d like to put the turtle remains by the wildlife trail cam place near Cocktown Creek. We toted the 80 pound reptile through the woods and placed it directly in front of the trail cam. In this way we were “baiting” the camera to document the animals that would be drawn in by this novel food source. Let’s just say this has become one of our most popular cameras! |
Schoolyard Trailcams Are Coming!
Trailcams have been set on middle school campuses around Calvert County. Soon students and teachers will have the opportunity to identify mammals hanging out right in their schoolyard! But animal identification can be trickier than it sounds. SO, to give you a head start on your skills, here’s a post from eMammal to help distinguish between a red fox, grey fox, and coyote! Don’t forget to take the quiz at the end!
